Interagency Steering Committee on Multimedia Environmental Models

This page serves to host documents and information pertaining to the Interagency Steering Committee on Multimedia Environmental Modeling (ISCMEM), a US Federal government group chartered through a Memorandum of Understanding that includes many U.S. Federal Agencies.

Environmental modeling and environmental monitoring networks can provide our global society with tools that can help quantify and predict how people affect the environment on which they depend. The analysis can serve to remediate and manage these vital resources.

This page seeks to increase the useful exchange of information about environmental modeling tools and techniques within the US Federal, state, and local governments, and seeks collaboration with foreign governments. Our goal is to enhance the development and use of freely shared public domain tools and data related to environmental modeling.

Working Groups

1. Software Systems Design and Implementation for Environmental Modeling

This workgroup colloborates in establishing software development standards and infrastructure components for environmental modeling systems.

2. Uncertainty Analysis and Parameter Estimation

This workgroup collaborates in the establishment of software development standards, infrastructure components, and methods for evaluating uncertainty of environmental models. A critical part of uncertainty analysis is related to the uncertainty of estimated parameters, and also extends to data uncertainty, model structure uncertainty, and scenario uncertainty. The activities of the workgroup involve all sources of uncertainty.

3. Subsurface Reactive Solute Transport Modeling

The specific goal of this workgroup is to collaborate in the establishment of software development standards and infrastructure components for environmental modeling systems.

4. Distributed Watershed / Water Quality Modeling

The specific goal of this workgroup is to collaborate in the establishment of software development standards and infrastructure components for environmental modeling systems.

JUPITER API

—The Joint Universal Parameter IdenTification and Evaluation of Reliability Application Programming Interface Description of Product: The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) developed the JUPITER API—the Joint Universal Parameter IdenTification and Evaluation of Reliability (JUPITER) Application Programming Interface (API).

This API provides resources for programming applications (computer programs) designed to analyze process models.

Process models simulate, for example, physical, chemical, and (or) biological processes of a site or experiment of interest, or may be an empirical model.

The analyses could include (a) sensitivity analysis, (b) data needs assessment, © calibration, (d) uncertainty evaluation, (e) optimization, and other types of applications that require similar capabilities. The API provides support for parallel computations; input, output, and communication between applications;

Documentation: Banta, E.R., Poeter, E.P., Doherty, J.E., and Hill, M.C., 2006, JUPITER: Joint Universal Parameter IdenTification and Evaluation of Reliability— An application programming interface (API) for model analysis: U.S. Geological Survey Techniques and Methods Book 6, Section E, Chapter 1, 268 p.

The documentation describes the conventions and the FORTRAN modules (including data, subroutines, functions, and generic interfaces) that constitute the API, and provides some example applications constructed using the API.
